Shedeur Sanders will start at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns in Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints, head coach Todd Monken announced.
Deshaun Watson returned to practice in a limited capacity on Friday and cleared concussion protocol on Saturday. Though he was officially listed as questionable, Watson is expected to be inactive for Week 9 and will not serve in a backup role, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
The Browns' No. 1 quarterback took a helmet-to-helmet hit during the first quarter of Sunday's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Watson missed only four snaps, but later reported experiencing concussion symptoms on Monday night.
Sanders, who will be making his first start since Week 18 last season, made his second appearance of 2026 coming in briefly for Watson against the Steelers. He went 2-for-2 for 2 passing yards before being replaced. He previously entered in Week 3 and threw one pass for a completion against the Carolina Panthers.
During his rookie season in 2025, Sanders made seven starts, throwing for 1,400 yards, 7 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. The Browns went 3-4 over that stretch with Sanders under center.
The delayed debut of New Orleans Saints rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson is reportedly right around the corner.
Tyson, this year's No. 8 overall pick who missed the Saints' first seven games with a right hamstring injury, plans to play Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz .
The former Arizona State standout "should be good to go," Schultz reported Saturday.
Tyson's latest hamstring setback occurred in August during a training camp practice. He left that joint session with the Jacksonville Jaguars early once his run after the catch ended with an awkward fall near the sideline .
Saints head coach Kellen Moore told reporters that Tyson's foot slipped out from under him as he was hit from behind. Moore clarified that the issue wasn't related to the receiver's injury track record.
At the moment, the 2-5 Saints are tied for third in the league with 39 pass attempts per game . Without a reliable run game, QB Tyler Shough is having to chuck the ball around the yard.
Having Tyson at his disposal should help.
